Data

Still no protest case spike (McClatchy News, 9 July):

A month after mass demonstrations against racial injustice filled city streets across America...data suggest the protests did not lead to dramatic increases in transmission.... Some metropolitan areas such as Miami, Dallas and Boise have seen increased case counts and ‘positivity rates’ — the percentage of coronavirus tests that come back positive — since May 25. But other cities that had some of the largest protests, such as Minneapolis, Chicago, Washington and New York, have...seen a decline in case counts and prevalence of the virus.... Major coronavirus spreading events are occurring primarily at indoor facilities.

No protest case spike yet (David Dayen's Unsanitized column, 15 June):

We’re starting to learn about the effect of three weeks of large outdoor protest gatherings on the spread of COVID-19.... There hasn’t been a case spike in cities like New York with the most pronounced protest movement. Minneapolis...tested 3,300 protesters, and early results show that only 1.4 percent of them had coronavirus, nearly three times lower than the average percentage of positive tests in the state.

Most...[protesters] are wearing masks and the science is increasingly showing that to be the most important intervention you can make to stop the spread. There’s even evidence that it prevents spread on mass transit..... Unfortunately, universal masking has been weirdly linked to the culture wars, and several public health officials have been forced to resign over mandatory mask declarations.

Planning

  • COVID-19 event risk assessment planning tool from Georgia Tech Applied Bioinformatics Laboratory -- estimates the probability that a member of a crowd is COVID-19 positive.
  • COVID-19 news and situation trackers from ~agk.
  • WHO risk mitigation options (pdf):
    • Can the mass gathering be modified so it can be held virtually?
    • Can the mass gathering be modified so that there will be no international participation?
    • Can the mass gathering be modified so those at high risk (eg, above the age of 65 or with underlying health conditions) will no longer attend?
    • Can the mass gathering be modified so that the event will be held outdoors and with limited close contact with other persons?
