Emergency onboarding process for Chicago Action Medical

  • If people don't work in or have healthcare background we are getting their contact info and telling them we'll be in touch with 20hr training info in the far future.
  • For healthcare workers we are checking references, having them watch one of the online bridge trainings, and a separate short video we made about consent.
  • All new medics have a one on one phone call, which includes a conversation about how we are explicitly police abolitionist and what that means in this moment.
  • If we feel good after the conversation they get added to a very chaotic groupchat where they are able to plug into meeting up with an experienced buddy before actions, who are showing up a few hours before hand to continue introductions and training, emphasising street medic values. Sometimes we have one or two experienced medics and a giant gaggle of new HCW volunteers.
  • For folks who don't sound like a good fit on the phone call we try and give them other ways to be involved, mostly encouraging them to get out on the streets and bring their friends. Carry some gloves and water if they must, and discourage them from marking as medics until they come through whatever local process if it exists.

Street medic groups are run entirely by volunteers who usually have day jobs or educational commitments. Please be patient.
